INTRODUCTION TO THE RITES OF PASSAGE
The rite of passage is literally the granting or permission or the opportunity to move to a higher level of human development. The permission is granted by the community/society, signifying the successful completion of a developmental process and the earning of the respect of the community for having done so. The purpose of the ritual (ceremony) for boys of African descent is to re-institute a system that validates their cultural heritage as they come to a crossroad and step into the corridor of manhood. The ritual supports and strengthens them, their family, and the African community. The final ceremony involves parents and family members coming together to commemorate students enrolled in Project HYPE and to emphasize their transition from young boys to young men.
